Anyone ever heard of Paul Vitz?

He is a tenured psychologist at New York University. He claims that people become atheists because they were raised fatherless. I bring this up because I've been in a running debate (if you can call it that) with a venomous theist who has bought into this nonsense, and not only makes this same argument, but argues that atheists are mentally ill. He cites a study done that claims that atheists are autistic. I pointed out that what the study actually says is that a significant number of those with autistic disorders don't believe in god is not the same as all atheists being autistic. Of course, he's convinced that the contrary is true and insists that this study validates his bigoted belief. It's just sad, really. The real question in my mind is how New York University has managed to lower their standards to the extent that they gave this Vitz guy tenure.

"In short, Meyer has shown that his first disastrous book was not a fluke: he is capable of going into any field in which he has no training or research experience and botching it just as badly as he did molecular biology. As I've written before, if you are a complete amateur and don't understand a subject, don't demonstrate the Dunning-Kruger effect by writing a book about it and proving your ignorance to everyone else!
