As far as I know, in most contexts it is usually used to mean respect rather than being afraid of God
I guess I'll just add that to the list of mistakes. Proper word usage is important when trying to convey meaning. Given the way he acted in the first two thirds of the book, no one should be surprised if people think fearing god means being afraid of him.
