The sad thing is, however, that aside from such purely mythical accounts of divine wrath as casting to Hell and assorted eschatological prodigies the churches also rely on more 'mundane' fear factors such as 'divine' interpretations of happenings and divinely-inspired violence. The latter works to take care of unbelievers and heretics and to make a point to "insecure" doubting believers at the same time.
