When a person comes out as an atheist and the family severs ties with that individual, the family members are the ones who made a choice to destroy the relationship, not the person who acknowledged he/she is an atheist.

If anybody ever decides to cut ties with me, it will be their choice and not mine. I don't want the relationships I have with my family members or friends to crumble simply because we do not share religious beliefs. Atheism does not destroy relationships. Individuals more committed to an ideology than a son, daughter, brother, sister, nephew, niece, etc. are the ones who end relationships.
