Your grannies heart was most likely in the right place. Perhaps her religion, as it tends to do, subverted her better nature. Tell you something amusing about my grandparents. If they thought that running people over would make me happy....and I was suicidal......they'd hand me their car keys, in the end. Not a shining moment of moral exceptionalism, just a comment on how devoted people can be to the continued life and happiness of those they love. We just want the people we care about to stop suffering, when we see it, we'll throw almost anything at the wall to make that happen. Your grandmother was grasping, but only because she loves you.
