Those two separate questions, and pretty broad ones.....
Short answer is, we don't know for sure. We have some pretty good ideas though.

Additionally, the concept of god doesn't get you anywhere in terms of the origins of the universe. You're just adding another layer, because god would need a cause too....IOW, who designed the designer?

God is not only not needed, but also an obstruction in explaining the origins of life and the universe, because his presence raises more questions than it gives answers-and thus he is quickly disposed of by Ockham's razor
