How is it a 'complete pantload'? Are you just being dense on purpose? Okay, let me try and clear it up with a rhetorical question; Would you agree that you can take in more information about the world through your five senses than you take in when someone speaks to you? Of course! You look at the grass, and automatically register that it is green! ou don't need someone to tell you that it is green, you know through teaching that the color the grass is is caleld 'green.'
You wouldn't get the same understanding of things if someone walked up to you and said 'the grass is green' without first having observed green grass for yourself. Observance of a phenomena is stronger and increases understanding of it more than being told about a phenomena. Your senses are more powerful than another person's words. Comprendo?
I'm sure you see where I'm going with this, but you'll probably come back with some intentionally thick misunderstanding/misconstrument of what I've said.
As for your response on why you've not talked to your brother about your atheism, that's fair enough. I ca nsee why you wouldn't want to strain the family ties with such discussion. However, why don't you ask him about his religion and listen openly? It would be so that you might better understand why he believes what he believes, which is a good thing, obviously.
