I don't really think we ARE worse off than we have ever been. By what metric are you measuring this? We've made great strides in science and medicine (no thanks to religion). What used to be a fatal illness 90% of the time is now treatable in a matter of days.
We've more-or-less stamped out slavery. (No thanks to religion- Ephesians 6:5). Slavery used to be a worldwide affair, now it exists in dilute form in the third world, and advocacy groups make it harder and harder for the institution to operate.
What if you are a child being sexually abused by a parent (or your priest)? You have hope now in this modern age where there is widespread awareness of such things. In the past, there was no recourse or outreach program to go to. People would be less prone to believe or help you.
That's just to name a few things, GC. So I ask again: by what metric are you measuring things?
