I am not a big fantasy fan but do enjoy LoTR - books and movies. Hobbit - just the book...movies were overdone but I watched it because it seemed like I had to after watching LoTR multiple times.
It's sword and sorcery, medieval fantasy. In the current world, only certain women possess the ability to perform magic and they're these warrior witches called Aes Sedai. But thousands of years ago, there used to be men who could wield this power but in a fight against a great evil, this fabled wizard known as the Dragon, bound the Dark Lord in another dimension. As a result, the male half of the power was tainted, so, any men who are born gifted go crazy from exposure and use of this power. So, they were all hunted down, killed, and held captive by the Aes Sedai. Now, all these thousands of years later, the cage the Dark Lord is in is weakening. Prophecy says the Dragon will be reborn in time to face the evil once again. Except, the male part of the magic is still tainted, so, nobody knows how it ends. Will the Dragon Reborn be strong enough to withstand madness and fight for the Light?
The series focuses on the adventure of a young man who discovers he can wield magic and an Aes Sedai who believes in these old prophecies tries to help him come into his power safely so that he can fulfill his destiny to defeat the evil that threatens the world. It reminds me of Harry Potter, honestly, because this humble farm boy travels with his friends, another boy and a girl, and the early books have a lot of "friendship will help him triumph" vibe.
