A Book?

RE: A Book?
Religion pretty much don't contribute with anything at all, and "truths" that religions have said that they have had have alwyas been proven wrong by science.

A good example for see how wrong religion have is that they have to adapt to scientific discoveries and facts. It have never been the other way around.
- Science is not trying to create an answer like religion, it tries to find an answer.

RE: A Book?
Science is simply the discipline used to examine the universe and find out how it works. Although scientists may get things wrong from time to time, science itself only ever reveals the truth about the world.

The reason that people like fr0d0 seem so against science simply seems to me because it contradicts practically every aspect of their belief.

The Bible suggests the world is only a few thousand years old. This is clearly wrong.

The Bible states that all humans derive from Adam and Eve. Again, wrong.

Noah's Ark and the global flood. Clearly a fairy story.

And the list goes on and on.

The trouble is that when you fall in love, either with a person or in this case, a book, then anything that by its very nature contradicts and disagrees with your love will always be a target. This isn't the fault of science as it exists in its own right but more the fault of those who do not have the necessary ability to realise that just because you want to believe something is true does not make it so.

The fact is, there is a deep psychological affect that causes people to believe there is something greater. Actually, the psychology behind awarness is extremely complex. Probably more than anyone expects or imagines.

I believe, as long as we have awarness, there will continue to be a belief in something greater. Something that cannot be difined or explained using the Language or the Mathematics that we use. It is much more complex than anything that meets the eye.

In reality, it is we (free thinkers) that are the minority.

Thats strange, I have heard frodo say that he believes in science as well as religion many times.

Can't we try to expand our knowledge instead of acting like a skipping CD.

RE: A Book?
I would like to make several points on the issue at hand.I think that the one thing that has made christianity the dominant religion in these past 2000 or so years has been its partnership with government and the power that comes with gaining favoritism with those in power. The church was able to secure its place in history not only by doctrine but by military might. They had the assistance of the Roman empire to crush all other competitive religious beliefs as illustrated in the various inquisitions and crusades against mainly,Islam who at the time was their most formidable opponent and threat to their survival.

Through this power they were also able to effectively suppress all scientific research and discoveries that contradicted their beliefs based on their sacred book of fallacies. They were also able to silence all those that were oppossed to the christian belief system by exile or death. The church has lasted this long not because of truth or divine assistance but because of tyranny, coercion, and fear.

Now that scientists and science have been set free from the shackles of persecution they have become the greatest threat to christianity and religion in general.Science has put to rest many of the lies and fallacies that were being passed on as truths for all of these years.Christianity is on the ropes now and have to adjust their old and outdated beliefs to keep up with science and the many modern discoveries that keep appearing.

Why did people believe in something greater before this time? Before the modern church, it was nature.

Also, I believe if we cannot find the middle ground, the battle will never end.

RE: A Book?
There is no middle ground g-mark.Apparently man has a predisposition to believe in something,we have pretty much worshipped everything and anything that has walked or crawled upon the face of this Earth. We have also worshipped the stars and the planets and wove tales of the gods based on the constellations and even today the catholics worship plaster representations of their Jesus, apostles and canonized saints etc.

RE: A Book?
It was a belief in spirits and multiple gods that was before the belief in one god. But native american believe in what they call a creator. This is quite common in many old religions and "extinct" religions. Also it was very usual that people mixed their relgions with others from people they've met. Like the vikings when they came to egypt, they borught home some religious ideas from there.

If there is no middle ground, then 'there shall be no winners'.

The native peoples understood more than we do.

Before there was theism there was polytheism.

Correction: Before there was monotheism there was polytheism.
