Go to England my dear... It is what you want to do and besides..far too many American tourists are getting targeted in israel at the moment, far too dangerous; kibbutz or no, I would be worried sick!!

And as you say ...you ONLY get two weeks off from work a year... and surely having a job and being able to support yourself is far more important.

I for one liked the middle-east, so going to Israel would not be a punishment for me. But if you have no desire to go, then its simple, don't go.

I guess my amazement at it is that unlike some members of this forum, I rarely experience religious guilt from my friends (or family, but that's mostly due to my efforts). My Christian friends typically leave me alone because I was born Jewish, which either makes me mysterious or irrelevant. My Jewish friends are either also atheist or don't pay that much attention. My mother gets on her high horse now and then, but I live 300 miles away and e-mails and phone calls can be ignored. I rarely ever go to synagogue (only when food is used as a bribe, basically, and also to obtain more comedic material). I realize much of the fervor is because they know I'm at the cut-off age, but it was a new experience to me to be told I HAVE to do something for my "Jewishness." Like grossing people out by eating gefilte fish wasn't enough.

Why? What's wrong with gefilte fish? I've heard of it,but have never eaten it. So far only pastrami on rye, bagels and cream cheese (make my own bagels) pirogi* (Ok,that's Polish) and blintzes. I am deficient Jewish food wise.


Trivia; that great 'English' dish of fish and chips is of Jewish origin.


*I think pirogi may be similar to knishes.

Have you seen gefilte fish in the store? The jars with the jellied broth and fish cakes? It makes people gag to look at it, much less try it. I'm pretty sure you'd have to be raised in a household that ate it regularly in order to find it appetizing.

I love a man already, and he tugs on my heart pretty strongly, but I did almost fall passionately for a Jew atheist when he promised we could live in a solar-powered hobbit hole with a huge garden...and his only stipulation was that the gefilte fish be freshly made, not the jarred kind. It made my heart pitter-patter. Maybe you had to be there.

I vote England. While Israel is a paid trip, why go somewhere you are not interested?

There are still pilgrimages, or at least pilgrimage sites for Catholicism. Though it may be more tourism at this point, not sure. I have been to Lourdes and it is big business.
