We have those things here in the States. The trouble is trying to figure out what to do when this system is gamed, or is being eroded by it's opponents.
There is strong support from both sides of this issue for separation. Catholics don't wan't to be forced to operate their businesses as per the law of the land, televangelists don't want to pay taxes, and I don't want either of these viewpoints to have anything at all to say about government. Separation is a system that can and has been gamed.
Religious thinking and it's attendant pitfalls did not arise from a position of education or knowledge, nor did they retreat when confronted with such positions. People who think critically can and still do (by large majority) think religiously.
