Inquiring mind seeks guidance from the governing powers.

Inquiring mind seeks guidance from the governing powers.
Moderator Notice:
To no one in particular:  Some recent 'Serious' posts have gone off the rails with jokes, insults, and bad language.

This was posted in another thread.  I have been ambling my way through the information superhighway and its forums and dark corners for many, many moons now. One facet I never quite able to discern is the condemnation, the disdain for thread "derailment". Isn't this how conversation works in the real world. it twists, it turns, it meanders about. Very rarely do people stay completely focused on a single topic. Even the most serious of topics are open to absurdness or folly. Especially when friends are conversing, you can bet your bottom dollar, that if you utter some sort of blunder, true friends waste no time in letting you know this. Please enlighten me, what am I missing?

We've got no problem with threads in general derailing.  You're absolutely right - that's what happens in conversations.  But the 'Serious' tag is meant to try to keep that particular thread on track.  When the tag is used, it's an indication that the OP would like for that thread to stay focused on the topic at hand.

But your point is well taken.

Much obliged for the response. I am a happy go lucky sort of lifeform. My lighthearted replies are hardly meant to depreciate the value of anyone's commentary or reflections. Life is not intended to be taken seriously. Matter of factly, life is a monumental joke, and death is the punchline.

I can't say I disagree.  For what it's worth, joking isn't specifically barred in 'Serious' threads, but replies - even ones that contain a joke - should address the topic.  I posted the speed bump more because of insulting language than anything else.

Civilities and politeness can be wasted on the terminally obtuse.

Camon, people rep this guy up! Posts like the one above and he's down in the teens for rep.   Huh

The kind words are appreciated. Even is it clear that I am unworthy.

I was on a sports board 20 years ago.  It had an awkward format created by the moderator, who may have still gone by the term sysop.  Back when you had to be at least kinda smart to be on the internet.  This guy became so determined to keep the topics on sports and frustrated by the continuance of glib, off topic, and mundane posts that he demanded a sports take be included with every post.  The result was posts like this:

Today is the last time I eat a tuna sandwich from a food truck.

Sports take:  I got the Dolphins over the Seahawks.

I would be more concerned that YOU are shouldering the burden "in particular"

Why was this warning aimed specifically at you!?

The serious tag was never going to be serious, from the moment it was proposed, to this moment, to some future moment. All it's ever done or ever will do is provide trolls with leverage.

What you're talking about, OP, is digression, not derailment, and yes, that's the way convo works. The serious tag subverts that by allowing the conversation to be derailed in the setup, and then intimidating digression from there.

There's nothing on this board which signifies that the content is less serious or more mockable than the inclusion of a serious tag. We should do away with it. Whatever hypothetical merit it may have had is clearly not operative here.

/two cents.
