The absolutely staggering amount of information that it contains about the people who dreamt it up. The changes that their thoughts and dreams and fears went through as time progressed, that is reflected in their changing beliefs. The air of magic and mystery that they lay over the natural world in an attempt to come to terms with what was not always easily understood. The stories that they produced, the myths, the legends. The art. Religion doesn't have a lot to say about our universe, or any god within it, but it says a hell of a lot about us.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!
On balance, nothing.
Religion has been a scourge to humanity. RE: What do you like about Religion?

Admittedly, it'll be a lot easier to like when it's gone. Bit like in-laws in that regard. Tell you this, I enjoyed it a hell of a lot more before I joined this forum.

Thanks for this thread, Gooders!
I like the music (not the lyrics so much). Some of the best classical pieces have come from Christianity. I also appreciate how the church I grew up in actually encouraged us to study the Bible in depth. As a result, I studied my way out of religion.
God is a personification of ourselves, what we wish to be, and that which we do not understand.
Yes, I love the occasional doughnut they give me
Please give me a home where cloud buffalo roam
Where the dear and the strangers can play
Where sometimes is heard a discouraging word
But the skies are not stormy all day
I like religion because it is revealing. Exposing people to a slew of religions is a fast and reasonable accurate way to separate people inclined towards intellectual rigor and critical thinking, and those who are given a brain by mistake and would prefer to act as if there ere nothing between the ears.

I don't find it exclusive to Christianity. The most beautiful Ive seen so far has to be inside a London synagog. Although I this is definitely more attributed to the people that made them than the religions themselves. Ive seen a rough estimate of 800+ million that have been killed in religious wars and atrocities. And that's just from the 3 monotheistic religions.. |
