How many years have you been an atheist?
|
I was never forced into a religion, my parents want me to believe what I want to believe, weather it be Christianity or the flying teapot. they have been time were i had doubts but that's only made me stronger, and going into a church of England school, I would always change the songs about God to something completely different, Example: the song 'my God is so big, so strong......' I would say the oppersite 'My god is so small, so weak and so puny there nothing he can do'
"Religion is regarded by the common people as true, by the wise as false, and by the rulers as useful" - Edward Gibbon (Offen misattributed to Lucius Annaeus Seneca or Seneca the Younger) (Thanks to apophenia for the correction)
'I am driven by two main philosophies: Know more about the world than I knew yesterday and lessen the suffering of others. You'd be surprised how far that gets you' - Neil deGrasse Tyson "Sometimes I wonder whether the world is being run by smart people who are putting us on or by imbeciles who really mean it." - Mark Twain
About 13.75 billion years.
But I've only really been paying attention for the last 48. If you're not supposed to ride faster than your guardian angel can fly then mine had better get a bloody SR-71.
I've been consciously atheist since about the age of 16, so that makes it 30 years. I stopped believing gradually, beginning at the age of 12 or 13, with a short lived attempt to restore my belief at 15. It didn't take.
I was Catholic...the religion that seems custom made to produce atheists.
I was born an atheist and I still am.

I don't ever remember believing god was real, truth be told I never used to think about it or care about the effects of religion until 9/11. Always been atheist.
You are currently experiencing a lucky and very brief window of awareness, sandwiched in between two periods of timeless and utter nothingness. So why not make the most of it, and stop wasting your life away trying to convince other people that there is something else? The reality is obvious.
Since I was at the age where I had my own religious identity.
Even if the open windows of science at first make us shiver after the cozy indoor warmth of traditional humanizing myths, in the end the fresh air brings vigor, and the great spaces have a splendor of their own - Bertrand Russell
I've never held any religious or theist beliefs, so all of my 23+ years.
Well, I'm 42 now and if I ever had any religious-like feelings, I outgrew them way back when I was in single figures; so far back that I have no memory of ever having any and more probably I never did. It was my parents who encouraged in me what we would now call critical thinking skills but back then it was just called common sense. They also taught me to read before I even started school so in that area as in many others I've always been advanced for the age I was supposed to be. That also explains why bad spelling and grammar has the same effect on me as fingernails on a blackboard.
However, more specifically it was my Dad who inspired and encouraged my interest in backyard astronomy (which is not a euphemism); an interest which was further fuelled by wonderfully mind-expanding science fiction of the seventies with which I grew up. Anyway, as a result I just can't take any of the god squad claims seriously. Their stories are just too damn small compared to the real magic of the Universe.
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist. This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair. Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second. That means there's a situation vacant.'
13-14 mins. I converted to Scientology then de-converted again
