I'm not an atheist, but I voted 'other' because I believe in a mix of apoliticism and social activism, probably reflecting my Taoist roots.

As a post-left anarchist & egoist communist (with an anti-political strain) I voted libertarianism, anarchism, socialism, communism and liberalism.

Honestly, I keep hearing about European socialism failing, and yet their economies are still going strong, their people are still being cared for quite highly, and they aren't falling the hell apart like the US is.
I'm a social progressive libertarian but when it comes to matters of trade and economics, I'm somewhere between socialist and socio-democrat. An absolute free market cannot exist. It is simply impossible. Without government interference, monopolies would dominate, those with money could easily crush any and all smaller competition or just as easily buy it out and completely negate any kind of marketplace competition that way. Fuck, just look at cellular service companies, or data service providers. Six of one; they're all complete crap and there's no real differences between them.
Also, Obamacare isn't failing, it's actually doing quite well. Its only real issues were the employer requirement (nixed mostly, delayed for the rest) and the website, and the website was shit because the republitards allowed next to nothing for its budget. They sabotaged the site, then acted like it was totally everyone else's fault. Fucking please. Only a tool would buy that bullshit. Saying the PPACA is a failure before it's even taken any kind of effect is not so much jumping the gun as much as it is stuffing itself into the cannon and launching itself over the gun.

And that thing about being able to keep your plan…
But I'm more interested in this website sabotage. How much did it end up costing? How much was it supposed to cost? And how did the republicans sabotage it? Other than the states when told "either you make it or we will" responding with "we'll have no part of it, you make it then"

When I was in the service, I spent three years in Germany (WEST Germany at the time); their form of gov't then was called "Democratic Socialism". There was a fair amount of centralized gov't control (police were regional, but the authority was national; VAT was the same nationally, as was this odd thing that you were allotted when and sometimes where you could vacation, depending on your career and region), that didn't seem to stifle entrepreneurship much at all. I thought it was a little restrictive.
I do think the USA needs to tighten things up some; the freedom/liberty to choose your career field without regard for what's NEEDED seems a bit warped. Not that you NEED to become a bricklayer if your skills are better served by being a bus driver, for example, but it really needs to be a FACTOR. Maybe then the US wouldn't have 70+% of the world's LAWYERS!
I guess what I'd like to see is a bit of social consciousness and social responsibility, the idea that "you don't live in a vacuum", your actions impact others, who have the same rights you do.
It's hard for me to get more defined than that, simply because a huge, wide nation with so many people is hard to peg that specifically.

Whooo necropost. BAD new person. ***rolls up newspaper***
"There remain four irreducible objections to religious faith: that it wholly misrepresents the origins of man and the cosmos, that because of this original error it manages to combine the maximum servility with the maximum of solipsism, that it is both the result and the cause of dangerous sexual repression, and that it is ultimately grounded on wish-thinking." ~Christopher Hitchens, god is not Great

I've been thinking about that rule, or recommendation rather. Apart from not getting an opportunity to interact with the original posters .. what's the harm?
What might be cool after a necro-post awakens a long dead thread, if discussion takes off again perhaps a mod could give the older part of the thread a light yellow, pink or blue wash to make it clear where the living 'tissue' of the thread is. Of course, that may be more bother than it's worth in practice.

I am not answering this because it is far too restrictive with the options - I am not a conservative, but I disagree with liberals a lot to - I am certainly not in favour of extreme capitalism, but I dislike socialism and communism even more - That puts me on the right - But other things like my views on the justice system and social issues will put me on the left - So I guess I'm somewhere in the middle.
I answered other - I'd say I'm some kind of social democrat more on the right but with some liberal social views.

Socialist, as the closest. But I think a society should be structured so that, 1) no one can coerce another in any way for any reason and, 2) no one profits off the labor of another - each profits from their own labor. That, and a society completely dedicated to protecting the human rights of every one of its citizens.
Probably hard to get right, but even the effort would be better than anything I see in the world today.

Libertarian, although I don't see how my atheism is related to that. I was a libertarian before I renounced my Catholicism. Although I have moved a slight bit to the center I do still consider myself a libertarian.
