The more I learn about the Catholic church the more horrified I become.

BTW does anyone know if excommunicated people are ostracised from society and/or are discriminated against at school or work in that country? I.e. in that country how bad is excommunication? I know in the middle ages it was horrible but in modern Brazil I don't know.

Er ... I don't know if this is going to make a difference to the discussion (please ignore if it won't), but this story is over 2 years old. I remember being shocked and outraged by the treatment this poor girl, her doctors, and her mother got from the Catholic Church at the time.

If only it were just 3d world shitholes like Brazil. But this happened right here in Phoenix ( okay - also admittedly pretty 3d world itself) .

This all happened two years ago. But, the prick in question, one Thomas Olmstead, while he is looking for medical professionals to excommunicate seems to have no trouble coming up with legal methods to shield his fucking church from sex abuse law suits.

Ugh. Indeed. And for those who didn't read the article, this comes from Fr. John Ehrich, the head of Bishop Olmstead's medical ethics committee, and hopefully someone who knows a thing or two about, you know, medicine:

So ... if the mother is going to die thanks to some kind of condition she has that the pregnancy is aggravating, you still can't terminate the pregnancy ... because two dead people (to use the Catholic Church's definition that a fetus = a person) are better than one?

The controversy represents a PR nightmare for the Vatican. The unnamed girl's mother and doctors were excommunicated for agreeing to Wednesday's emergency abortion yet the Church has not taken formal steps against the stepfather, who is in custody. My wife and i were expelled from such a place after 10 years of dedicated service from me. This was after they found out she had a 250 dollar aday Heroin habit. They told us She need to repent before the church and pray that God would heal her and make her stop. She was not ready to come forward but she did ask, or rather we asked for help. The elders response: "we are not currently able to help someone in your condition, find another church. You are welcome back when you sort things out."
