This is why we have a judicial system and not a vigilante serve-the-victims based system; hot heads will not think rationally in such situations.
I appreciate you taking the time to consider that a kneejerk reaction is not always the best.
He should be detained for the rest of his life, insane or not. Insanity just decides what facility he ends up in.
After he's had his day in court, I would think that outcome likely.

I'm surprised to see so many people on here screaming for the death penalty. I'm against the death penalty, and from that poll that was here quite a while ago, it seems that most people here are as well. Killing him doesn't make a person any better than him. However, I don't want to turn this into a death penalty debate, so...carry on.

I checked and Colorado is a death penalty state. He'll likely get the needle for this. :/ I don't agree with that, however, just making a statement.

I am for the deathpenalty but not for someone who is insane. I would like to feed this guy his balls but a society can't do that. If However he is sane it should NOT take 20 years for the sentence (which will be death for sure ) to be carried out.

I'm in favour of execution in principle. Not for closure or as a warning -- I don't think it works for either. I think if it could be demonstrated beyond a shadow of a doubt that person X had committed a particularly bad crime (such as the one being discussed), had zero chance of rehabilitating and that said crime wasn't the result of a potentially curable / manageable medical condition then it would be permissible to execute them in a painless manner. The rationale is that keeping someone alive simply to remain in prison their whole life is senseless, a waste of resources.
Real life is a little more complex though. The changes in health these past hundred or so years have revealed all sorts of things that inform our decisions when it comes to punishing people, as well as the notion of what constitutes accountability. Is the person with a golf ball size tumour in their brain responsible for their erratic behaviour? In practice, it's difficult to find concrete answers and there's always the chance something has been overlooked. In a non-ideal world I think it's best to make decisions that protect people while still accounting for that possibility of something being overlooked.
Ah, and the shooter's family. It may be that if he were imprisoned for life that they would still visit him and get something from that. I think sometimes it's forgotten that the perpetrators of horrible crimes have their own families who often suffer along with the victims'. Not only will they know their child/sibling/parent has had their future effectively ended, but it's also possible they'll feel partly responsible.

I am not in favor of the death penalty and do not condone its use under any circumstance. This goes back to my existential ideals, however.

I used to be very against the death penalty, but now I just don't care any more. I don't have enough faith left in humanity to care.

Would be funny if it weren't so true.

A bit like me. Violence towards each other, carelessness, thoughtless, selfishness, greed, corruption and lack of compassion has left me without much faith left in humanity. Perhaps one day when we've all grown up a bit maybe, but not right now.
I support the death penalty for the simple fact that when you take someone's very existence away, why should you get to keep yours?

Mankind's intelligence walks hand in hand with it's stupidity.
Being an atheist says nothing about your overall intelligence, it just means you don't believe in god. Atheists can be as bright as any scientist and as stupid as any creationist.
You never really know just how stupid someone is, until you've argued with them.
