What you would be referring to Cat (if such a thing could be shown to exist or at the very least inferred) would be a Theory of Quantum Gravity. This theory does not exist, a Nobel awaits those who could provide it. So when you say "Where did the magical gravity field that caused the big bang come from?" I can answer that definitively for you, your imagination.

Gravity before the big bang would be quantum gravity. There isn't any assumption to be made here, you asked the question. The Grand Design is a good book, you should read it. Alot of stuff feels like a reprint of A Brief History of Time and Universe in a Nutshell though. Was there something about that link (or the book) that you wanted to discuss? Read about halfway down your link, there's a word that appears before the word "gravity"...be a sport and read it aloud to the class?

You have a strange understanding of the word "magic" then, don't you?
Let me dumb this down as far as I am able to.
The sort of "gravity" you are thinking of that keeps you rooted to the floor and the sort of "gravity" that would be proposed by a Theory of Quantum Gravity (or your "magical gravity field") are not entirely the same things (I know I know, god-damned scientists using the same words to describe different things based on specialization in their fields..it's almost like they're trying to fuck with you). Moreover, the theory of a thing is not the thing, something may exist (as in we might observe something happening - the "what") for which we do not currently have a theory (an explanation - the "how"). A Theory of Quantum Gravity would look to unify General Relativity with Quantum Mechanics, and this is important, because our current understanding of the big bang is that of a singularity..which is spatially small enough for quantum effects to be very important, but as we understand it, all mass and matter was contained within this singularity...so that makes it very large, very massive..huehuehue - the domain of General Relativity. Neither GR or QM alone appear to be able to explain this for us....that's why the answer to "what caused the big bang-where did the singularity come from" is "We don't know".....not, as you inserted to argue against "a magical gravity field". -If- we could unify these two theories we would be looking at that "magical gravity field" you seem to think science assumes (it does not) and we would call that.....The Theory of Quantum Gravity. It would be a theory capable of explaining how the singularity could have come into existence (or so we hope).
