Intelligent life, yes... The Judeo-Christian god, no.

However, proof would be evident of this someone's existence. Photographs, birth records, death records, living memories, a body (living or dead).

So god is an alien? I thought you were a Catholic, not a Scientologist.

Do you believe that intelligent life exists elsewhere in the universe?

Can anyone here (besides us zealots) answer a question, or challenge to their reasoning seriously? oops thats 4!

1) No, but I will if I find sufficient reason to.

2) No, proof is hard to come by.

3) Don't know but would be curious to learn more about it if so.

4) Depends. Do you mean answer a question without any facts or a proper understanding of the question? Perhaps I could pretend to but no I couldn't seriously answer an incoherent question.

What is really holding me back is my inability to understand what a 'god' might be. What are the minimum requirements?

Eternal?

Creator of everything?

Moral decider?

Are we specifically defining a god as the god of the bible? (I find it very implausible for that god to exist given what little I've heard. Too many apparent contradictions.)

Please tell me exactly what qualities a god must possess so that I can consider if I do or can believe in or reject them for that matter. So far, I just don't really know what we're talking about.

RE: A Simple Question...or 3!
Want? Belief is not a matter of 'want' for me. If you desire to convince me of something then you better bring a credible argument backed with observable evidence.

I would like to think there is other intelligent life in the universe, but I have no way of knowing. With my understanding of post supernova solar system formation, the hundreds of near exoplanets discovered, extrapolated over a 13.7B light year wide universe (in any direction), containing billions of galaxies, each containing trillions of solar systems, I conclude it is very possible that intelligent life exists somewhere else in our universe.

Your oops 4 question is not a question at all. At best it's a rhetorical interrogative statement that invokes the idea that people that can't be classified as christian zealots are unreasonable.

If one day there were compelling evidence that showed an intelligence was required to create the universe, then I would believe in that causal agent, but this would not be nearly enough to invoke your God as described in the bible. In fact, that stretch would be more damning to creative genius than blaming Shakespeare for the authorship of the Twighlight novels. Why you ask? Because no intelligence capable of creating a universe and concerned about a particular life form on one nondescript ball of conglomerated dust would allow a book to be published that on the first page said there was light before creating the sun.

For your pleasure....
IF, big fucking IF, your god is the real deal and everything in the bible is true; I will do everything in my power to ensure I am on the express elevator to hell (a short stop at the pearly gates to kick St. Peter in his peter might be worth the excursion). Eternal burning and gnashing of teeth is much more attractive than spending an eternity with you calloused kneed godcock sucking christians. Besides, I've always been amused why you believers think that the first dude to tell god to go fuck himself would torture anyone for doing the same. I'm quite confident that basement cat will hook me up with some quality nip.

3 questions for you ronedee:

Why the question about the existence of intelligent life in the universe mixed in with the questions about the existence of god?
Did you think that a bunch of heathens would subscribe to alien existence just because they don't believe in gods existence?

Do you yourself "believe" in aliens?

Real answer: because s/he expected us to all say we believed in aliens, providing dissonance for our atheism. Which we didn't do...

At least with aliens it is clear what we're talking about. We don't have any evidence yet but it is a distinct possibility that we may some day come across some. We can imagine what that would look like. But who knows what it would like to discover a god? Would a really long lived and powerful alien be a god? No? Then what the hell are we talking about?

Quite so, which is why theists should logically 'believe in' aliens as. If they are willing to buy the god concept, aliens is actually a significant step down on the credulity ladder.

I think you missed something. Not your fault based on our esteemed friend's inability to use quotes, but....

Check out the bottom of the large white block in post #8. After given a reasonable reply why someone would believe in the existence of intelligent life elsewhere in the universe Mother Theresa had this to say:

"OK...so God could exist then?"

The fucker doesn't understand the argument. Worse, the fucker doesn't care. She (Mother Theresa) only wanted to drop this bit in when someone said anything close to 'yes' regarding life elsewhere in the universe.

For this reason I conclude ronedee to be a disingenuous cunt. Strike up the christian persecution lack of civility band now.

RE: A Simple Question...or 3!
  • Do you want to believe in God?

I do believe in God.
  • ...or is [proof] the main thing holding you back?
  • Do you believe that intelligent life exists elsewhere in the universe?

I believe in Physics, so yes. Either God specifically planted life on Earth 3 billion years ago, or life self-starts, and if life self-starts then there certainly should be life throughout the universe. Either case doesn't affect my salvation one way or the other.

Now I've answered your questions here are two questions I have for you.

1. Why do you accept the Latin Vulgate as "sola scriptura", and why should I accept it as more authoritative than the same Greek NT text that you have or the MT Hebrew?

2. Given that we both agree God's Word is perfect - why should I believe that the RCC has the sole right to interoperate the Bible, and that anyone else must be in error?
