Let me get my head around this. You have a certain segment of your government that is getting butt-hurt about whether or not other people (who do not share their opinions of whether or not heterosexual and homosexual relationships are equivalent) decide to marry two guys, or two girls...and this makes you somehow makes the UK different from the US. Looks to me like we're both scraping the bottom of the same barrel.

The Church of England seem determined to exclude themselves from a changing world, becoming ever more isolated and irrelevant in an increasingly democratic and equal society.

Our president made a similar announcement in support of gay marriage. The response was damned near identical.

Bob Blackman's a known twat so I'm not surprised at his response (or that the BBC have chosen his statement for their soundbite) but I'll be taking notes about who votes which way. The british public, by & large, seem indifferent to same sex marriages; the result of the last Gallup poll I saw (2009/2010, I think) which asked the public if they were opposed to the idea of gay marriage, was a massive 'don't care'. I don't know how robust the sample was but Gallup generally do their job right so I'm prepared to take it on face value.

Obama made an announcement of his personal opinion on the issue. That's great, but Cameron is going further than that; he's trying to make policy changes that will affect national law. POTUS can't write bills. It's beyond the authority of the office. Making policy changes, in the way our system works, for the president specifically, is all about voicing one's opinion (as that's all he has going for him). Giant talking head. If he wanted to write and sponsor a bill in support of gay marriage (or any bill) he would have had to run for a different office.
Now I'm not actually familiar with how your system works- is your PM capable of doing more than voicing his opinion?
