To be good at something typically requires practice right? Like sports. So if I have had plenty of practice and I'm good then I turn to religion, am I not still good and wouldn't I satisfy my wife?

Again, this is an individual example, which doesn't say anything when talking about large groups. Maybe Ted Haggard was a sex master (ask his gay prostitute lover) but that doesn't have any significance on a group as a whole. From what I can see about Christians (and Muslims far more so) they are sexually repressed twits who think it's shameful to even talk about it.

"Atheists have better sex" is a general statement meant to be taken as a thumb rule, not as an law of nature. Giving arguments about how "some atheists have shitty sex-lives" or how "some christians have great sex" is not really relevant here.

The argument is pretty simple. Most religions demonize sex and sexual desires. Thus the stigma and shame associated with it reduce the quality of sex religious people have. Atheists, not being bound by these notions, achieve greater pleasure due to absence of guilt and/or greater interest. The conclusion makes sense. When and where these statements do not apply, e.g. religious people without guilt or atheists with, the statement is no longer true.

Among the atheists people I know of, topics like porn and monogamy/polygamy are less controversial subjects than among christians.

Depends on what religion you turn to. You could turn to one with strictures on sex. Also, it's not just practice at the mechanics of sex, but being able to communicate with any and all of your partners that makes you really good at what you do. I don't give a stellar blowjob because I've got a lot of practice bobbing my head up and down - it's because I pay attention to every minute thing I can possible pay attention to about my guy leading up to and during it, as well as asking questions.

And many old-fashioned people or people with vague religious inclinations have a problem talking about sex.

Touché. So, could we just say that it is not affected by our religion or lack thereof(unless said religion basically commands lousy sex in a round-about way lol) but by how in-tune we are with our mates mind and body?
Since there are so many denominations or sects in religions , this could create enough difference in a couple, making them out-of-tune. Not so much a problem among atheists.

I'll say that atheists, on average, probably have better sexlives.

For instance, I could date a Jewish guy who wants absolutely nothing to do with understanding my body as a woman and what I go through. Unlike the Jewish atheist guy who was so into biology and, as I said, nerding out about sex, that I consistently had way more orgasms in a night or weekend with him than any other man except my current boyfriend. Out of the monotheistic religions, Jews have a slightly healthier idea of sex but only in the context of marriage, and that's only if you're lower Conservative or Reform. Even more liberal Christians can make sex the taboo area where parents don't talk to their kids about the mechanics, and if they do they don't also teach them how to discuss it because they should be considering how to be moral and godly instead.

I joked about this in Area 69 but there's a site called Christiannymphos.org where they use SCRIPTURE to justify things that shouldn't need fucking justification at all.

And for the record, my fairly liberal Jewish mother gave me books and had a mechanics discussion with me at a couple different ages, but refuses to acknowledge to this day that I have sex with anyone. There was no training on how to listen and ask questions, on how it's important to talk to your partner to make sure you're happy (with anything in a relationship).

I don't know what made the change, but by the time I was 23 I had realized that what i had been doing in the past wasn't working. I coincide that with finally letting go of posing as a Jew and realizing by finally meeting other atheists that there wasn't anything wrong with me. I wasn't evil for being a woman. I wasn't evil for liking sex. I wasn't a whore. I was human, I have a human body that I enjoy and like having others enjoy. And it's okay - even stimulating! - to discuss how best to do that. Which is great, because if you can discuss where someone's body fluids are going to go, you can rationally discuss where the coffee mugs are going to go.

From that perspective, I understand. In christianity, people often choose what to hold dear about their religion and what not to as I'm sure you have encountered many times in debate with them. So, I agree with this comment as it pertains to most religions but not all.
However, Christians are self-absorbed and egotistical so even if they want to be good at sex they probably won't be.
