Religious people dislike atheists because they feel threatened when represented to fantasy shattering proof and evidence combined with rational thought that could drag them screaming into the dark pit of reality or something.

It's different, for millennia we've always had some sort of deity to guide us and to explain things. In our history as a species atheism is young and different from the old norms so people aren't really open to accepting it yet.
Take a look at segregation policies in the U.S, when the segregation ended in the states people weren't very open to it and fought against it. Now the segregation is frowned upon in society today.
I think given time Atheism will be accepted (or moreso) then it now, and people won't hate it.

Many people on this site have been doing this type of thing to me. Read more clearly, please.
You said the news portrayed them and then specifically said that you are (or were, you didn't specify) one of the people who 'held a huge judgement' against 'atheists' for that. I mean what is the other reading of that? All Atheists weren't trying to remove the ground zero cross. Most of us don't give a shit one way or another.
I'd take it kindly for you to not insult my intelligence by pretending that you didn't say something that I can read a paragraph up, and then suggest that I need better reading comprehension. If you meant something else you expressed it very poorly.

You apparently voluntarily remain a member of a child-raping, criminal, organization which has condoned murder and torture during its period of secular power.
You really should expect to take a little shit for that.

I do find some people distasteful, vulgar, and rude, but that doesn't mean I hate them. The OP sounds like projection to me.

The Lame May Walk has a point, they relay the most preferable message possible from a believer in the threads and yet they get kicked in the ass and dissected into stereotypes before having a chance to offer a reason for being rebuked. Last I checked anyone can believe whatever they want if it doesn't hurt someone else, right? Why create a rift when there doesn't need to be one? From what I can see they should be welcomed with open arms, politely. I'd expect nothing less as an athiest, from a reasonable religious.
Just sayin, quit bein pirate hookers
If I were to create self aware beings knowing fully what they would do in their lifetimes, I sure wouldn't create a HELL for the majority of them to live in infinitely! That's not Love, that's sadistic. Therefore a truly loving god does not exist!
Quote:The sin is against an infinite being (God) unforgiven infinitely, therefore the punishment is infinite.
Dead wrong. The actions of a finite being measured against an infinite one are infinitesimal and therefore merit infinitesimal punishment.
Quote:Some people deserve hell.
I say again: No exceptions. Punishment should be equal to the crime, not in excess of it. As soon as the punishment is greater than the crime, the punisher is in the wrong.

The perception many -- especially in the rural United States -- have of atheists is that we're amoral, anti-theistic, and lead meaningless lives. This image is pushed heavily in conservative churches and, in the past, the media. The aggressive "New Atheist" movement -- which is very anti-theistic -- also doesn't help.

The religious hate atheists because they have the annoying habit of pointing out all the inconsistencies and outright stupidity in their favoured fairytales.

Ah right so Atheist isn't a way of referring to us as a group that I wasn't aware of. I hear New Zealanders referring to Maori to mean the Maori part of the society, I think...
I hear moderate christians on the radio, accepting of female ministers and gays, all for interfaith dialogue. It's my impression atheists bother them though, they even seem to say the word with distaste. I can understand they're uncomfortable with us, like bubbles sharing space with pins.
