Faux News: Atheism is a religion, too
#41
RE: Faux News: Atheism is a religion, too
humans may have religious belief genetically hardwired into our dna, which is why so many gravitate to these beliefs. People want to have a world view and a moral system, religion can provide that ready made.

There are plenty of die hard atheists who appear to have simply replaced evangelical religion with atheist activities.

OMG, they're all back.

Fuck.
Being told you're delusional does not necessarily mean you're mental.

We have a need to understand and control our surroundings, and a need for human bonding.

Religion sucks at helping us control our surroundings, but may have helped with tribal bonds.

Seriously?  Perhaps you could explain what evangelical activities atheists do.  Do we speak in tongues and pretend to get supernatural knowledge?  Tell the world about how atheism will save your souls?  Pray to nature to cure our illness?

Hammock is making a fair point. I've run across atheists who can't seem to shut up about atheism, who force it into every conversation, and make a point of telling theists how wrong they are, often unprovoked, and in a loud, impolite manner.  These are the people who want all references to religion out of public life and would hardly balk at book-burning.

If this isn't 'evangelical atheism', I'm sure I don't know what is.

You do realize you responded to a thread that hadn't had a response in 5 years, right?

As a former chapter officer in American Atheists, I got to meet and know literally hundreds of non-believers. Only a handful of them behaved in this manner. Their behavior does not define atheism for the majority. Atheism, in its simplest and most accurate definition is nothing more than the absence of religious beliefs. Atheism is the antithesis of religion.

Of course it doesn't.  Similarly, the behaviour of radical theistic evangelicals doesn't define all theists.  Sam Harris is no more representative of atheists in general than Pat Robertson is of Christians in general.

Most Christians I know are indifferent toward atheists.

What atheist activities are we talking about?

Awful things like telling people they're not going to hell... Actively not going to church, and baking cakes for gay people.
