So "good" here is a relative term. As in "good" compared to the mods of the .com site. If it makes you feel any better I'm no good either. RE: Look what I found!

Oh, I remember him, I wasn't mod at the time. He still had a good run
Nothing like skimming through his post history and have a laugh (May 25, 2013 at 12:16 am)Drich Wrote: AF.com is indeed a very anti religious site. Unless the religious offender is a poe who enjoys one sided arguments. Because the Mods over there do indeed restrict and ban anyone who dares speak unashamedly for God and the bible. Before this site, I was banned from an atheist / freethinker site for discussing human biology, in defence of the Catholic Churchs opinon on homosexuality. The "freethinkers" said that biology was" homophobic" and I was asked to stop discussing it*. (*the mods had lots of homosexual posters pressuring them to censor scientific facts about human bodies, because they didnt like the implications of these facts for their own sexuality). I said that I was not prepared to marginalise science, or distort understanding of human bodies, and was ultimately banned from the site, in a massive show of intellectual cowardice. I thought that was a great advert for the credibility of "free thinkers" and the strength of their arguments lol Of course, the idea of "free thought" is misleading ultimately. The truth exists, and so we cannot really "think freely" we can only accept or deny the truth. I also found the whole affair deeply satisfying, as no-one is more acutely aware of how bad and idiotic that action made the forum and its members look, than the forum and its members themselves. At the end of the day, whatever kind of forum you join, you gotta follow their rules - of course. But no rule can credibly be allowed to suppress knowledge or portray science as bigoted. I am very impressed by this forum. I have not seen any bad examples of moderation and think in general the site has a good membership and good conversations. There were a few in the beginning with me, but those mods were quickly leashed or weeded out. Without doubt this web site as it is today, is truly a free and open forum. I have all but devoted the lion's share of my time here.
Unfair that some moderation and banning might be, it's always advisable to remember that when entering a discussion forums you bind yourself to the rules and laws of said forum. If you don't agree with the parameters, it's not worth staying there (like me an my very brief visit to the A+ forums). I can agree that it is insensible, hypocritical and unfair that some opinions are censored, but on the other hand, the people who created the forums are justified in enforcing the rules so that the milieu is in accordance with what the creators wished to gain from the forums.
I am happy to notice that our theist member base seem to thrive here. First and foremost this is a forum for atheists over the world to get together, but I personally think it's a great part to provide a (somewhat neutral) ground for believers and non-believers alike to come together and actually discuss without too much censorship. Hopefully this will remain a place for that for many years to come. When I was young, there was a god with infinite power protecting me. Is there anyone else who felt that way? And was sure about it? but the first time I fell in love, I was thrown down - or maybe I broke free - and I bade farewell to God and became human. Now I don't have God's protection, and I walk on the ground without wings, but I don't regret this hardship. I want to live as a person. -Arina Tanemura

Someone has to offset you negative yin. What I was saying was that I spend more time here than I do on the christianforums because there is more freedom here to truly discuss God, the bible, or christianity in general. They tend to ban people for representing" the wrong world view "like af.com does.
From the little I've seen of xtian forums I tend to agree with you on that...if nothing else.
Let's face it, dissent is one thing they do not tolerate.
Which is why I sought out the other place first and then settled here. Say what you will but I have seen a complete change in the general understanding most of the older members have of christianity and of God. Not to the point of belief, but at least your not asking the:'can god make a rock...' questions any more... A lot of you are learning to think outside the typical atheist box, and ask your own questions. Present company excluded of course.. You are firmly rooted in a box of your own construction and have either lost the key or nailed it shut from the inside. But even so at least you have progressed from the single line profanities and blasphemes that had me completely ignore anything you said for the first nine or ten months I've been on this site. To multi line profanities and blasphemes married to the occasional bit of legitimate reference or link, that requires consideration.
Who knows maybe in a few more years you might get a positive member review from me.. |
