Sex reassignment surgery is more than just done to someones outer appearance Violet.

Mmmmmm.... not really. It has some functionality changes, but then: what surgery doesn't? Mild or severe or anywhere between... doesn't matter so much.

It can involve Hysterectomy, Mastectomy, chest reconstruction, Face reconstruction, as well as hormones and therapy, for examples. I think that the range and scope of the surgeries involved is why it is classified to my knowledge as cosmetic.

My, but that was a short list. And to think... most of those are *completely* for cosmetic reasons; the rest are heavily impacted by cosmetics.

Self-image is a pretty solid motivator, and it's fairly frustrating to be misgendered for most of the trans community.

Range and scope have nothing to do with whether a thing be altering apparence by intent.

Actually, I'm attempting to spare those who might not know squat about transsexuality from the misinformation you are providing. That's why I'm being extra sure to be extra explanatory.

TaraJo - My wife and I are friends with a couple where one is a male to female transexual.

We also know a person who is a female to male trans. I wouldn't say we were his friend. Not yet. Haven't really spent all that much time with him.

The MtoF friend goes through highs and lows about it. Gotta be rough.

Clearly, there is an argument. I don't know how you managed to miss it, but it's there. More critically, though... there is misinformation in a transsexuality thread. Should we *not* provide true information the next time some Truther tells us that 9/11 was an inside job or whatever it is they spout, and also NOT argue with him?

Someone has to start a debate, you know... they don't just happen spontaneously and independently from perceivers

Anyway, the question is generally something I would pose to the people who object to same sex marriage. I mean it's hard to call ours a same sex relationship however you look at it. But depending on the order of who transitions when, there's going to be a window where the state sees us as same sex and it gets really complicated.
