Not all i5s are 8 threaded, and I have no idea of what your setup actually is.
The suggestion of trying to find an alternative CPU that fits your mobo for a lower price, perhaps from some older architecture like the Xeon here, stands.
If I may, what do you do on that computer that requires 4 extra CPU threads, even if they are "hyper", that a non-hyper CPU can't handle just as well?

It's mostly multitasking, rather than a single app. I'm invested in a specific socket 1155 solution and am not looking for a big change.
(If I were looking to go that way at all, I'd probably be looking at the latest Ryzen processors instead. Better future-proofing in that direction.)

Dealing with a headache, not a horrible headache, but a dull ache that won't go away. I want to take a nap, but I don't want to miss out on the rest of the day. :/

That 1155 isn't exactly new, is it?
And multitasking works great with a single core CPU, all you need is RAM, unless you want to do cpu intensive operations while multitasking.... like video encoding while playing a youtube video. Yes, there is a time penalty for the single CPU processor, but it's still workable.
When it comes to the difference between 4 cores/8 threads or 4 cores/4 threads, it's mostly negligible for general multitasking: http://www.bit-tech.net/reviews/tech/cpu...review/10/, https://www.techpowerup.com/forums/threa...st.219417/

Oy vey. Just took a peek at Excel Online. I haven't used Office since Office 97. Everything has changed!

Well, thanks for the tips. I think I'll probably put off upgrading for now. My finances haven't been the best lately.

Spent four hours looking for the remote control for my Blu-Ray player. Tore my room apart multiple times before finding it in plain sight. Currently lying on the bed recovering from all the physical exertion (which included disassembling and reassembling my bed, right down to the bed frame TWICE).

You might want to take a look at what is required to get the x3430 to that level.

Yes, the guy does say that he overclocks it quite a bit.
Still, if it can perform half as well as an i7-8700, it's still probably much more than your i3 that you're struggling with, no?

It's mid-afternoon and I'm watching an ethereal, orange-ish, twilight glow hang over my city. Probably from the Carr Fire about 100 miles away. The dystopia has arrived.

You're missing the point that I made earlier. Whether an i5 or an x3430, the total cost is comparable, yet the i5 is simpler, easier, and doesn't depend on overclocking. If I'm going to replace the entire guts of the system, I'm better off spending a little more and getting a Ryzen. Then in two years time, if I want to upgrade, I have a path available. Whereas the x3430 is simply a dead end. Regardless, I replace whole systems infrequently as it's difficult given my lack of fingers. A CPU upgrade is much more doable, just from a personal standpoint. And I certainly don't want to do a complete upgrade two times when I can get away with one. I don't like overclocking, either, particularly if you have to push the system bus significantly as they have done. I'm too old for this shit. This isn't a hobby for me anymore.
Finished my reading of the Rupert Sheldrake book for this cycle of my philosophy group (we meet every three weeks). Huzzah! I'll be glad to be done with Sheldrake next cycle. He's beginning to get on my nerves.
