Well that burned all my Ivy fantasies. She is closer in age to my daughter than to me.

At 28, not only could she be my daughter but mine and my wife's together.

I'm so depressed.

I believe there is a skew in the demographics, both in terms of atheists being younger and forum/computer users being younger. I do not, however, think it has anything to do with any hypothetical relationship between lack of knowledge and wisdom and a resultant lack of religious belief. It's my impression, and I believe studies bear this out, that atheists as a whole are some of the most knowledgable and intelligent people you will meet. I don't know whether the purpose of your questions was to probe that hypothesis specifically or to answer some larger questions about atheists and atheism as a whole, but I think that specific question can be answered in the negative.

Oh, and I too am an old fuck, fwiw.

(ETA: However, I'm not an atheist, so that only relates to your perception of the ages of forum members here. There are facilities for creating polls; you could make one and see who responds.)

(ETA2: I made a logical error. [I'm old. I get to do that.] While the youthful demographic profile may not imply anything negative about the knowledge and intelligence of atheists in general, that does not imply anything in the specific case. It may not be true that, in general, atheists are lacking in intelligence and knowledge, but that does not necessarily imply that you and your atheism specifically are not a result of stupidity and rebellion. The fact that you're an atheist doesn't necessarily mean that you're not a twat.)

I'm 34 and have been an atheist for most of my life since the age of 12. I've never been content to just accept that god doesn't exist since I don't perceive it, and I am constantly trying to refine my worldview so I don't become trapped by a position I accepted at a young age. I still have yet to find anything that convinces me that god is anything but the fabrication of the human mind.

50+ here.

Been an atheist since about the age of 18.

Called myself an agnostic for years, but that was due to my misunderstanding of definitions.

Please post where you are getting you statistics.

You'd believe if you just opened your heart" is a terrible argument for religion. It's basically saying, "If you bias yourself enough, you can convince yourself that this is true." If religion were true, people wouldn't need faith to believe it -- it would be supported by good evidence.

Most atheists I know are 20 or so years older than me, and I'm 29.

46, and actually spent 20 of those years caught up in the god thing. Its much easier to believe in god when your community frowns on non-belief...that's the only excuse I've got.
