Yes you can, but if you have to do that to make your ideas work then the problem lies with those ideas and not the people you're trying to convince. Words evolve meanings over time, it's true; however that doesn't mean they are arbitrary things that can have any definition you feel like assigning them. That's why we have dictionaries and the ability - generally - to make ourselves understood. If you want to talk science and have your ideas taken seriously, you need to accept the language of science unless you have a bloody good reason not to. You have an issue with the modern scientific definition of the word "theory", take it up with the National Center for Science Education.

But if you want to go down the route of using only the 'original' meanings of commonly-accepted words because they're not as inconvenient for you, then you'd better leave Atheist Forums since an atheist was originally a christian, a person who denied the existence of the Roman gods. In fact, stop using your computer, given that the word originally meant a person who calculated numbers for a living, and start telling everyone you use an electric Difference Engine.
Or we could stop this silly semantic game and actually have a proper grown-up discussion.

Look, i know that you know what a cancer is but i just want to know if you know where the word cancer come from and why someone in the past gave that particular name.

Sure Stimbo as far as you learn what the modern science establish than you shouldn't have any problem, after all who care where the meaning of the words come from as far as you can manage the daily life.
But a big problem may arise.
Take the religions which they are builded on dogmas or false truth.
After so many times that the meaning of the words get changed the original message become a false truth.
The same thing happen in all field of life.
What was a truth yesterday today will end up in the rubbish bin of history.
Not all the changes are good changes.
We need to change to survive but we got to be very careful and make sure the changes come for the good.
The word theory has been vandalized and his original meaning is gone for many.
Not for me however.Smile

Yes they are. If they are not backed up by evidence, then they are not theories. They are ideas or hypotheses, much like every religion today. You really have no idea how much time, money and effort is put into testing theories, do you? How rigorously they are scrutinized or how they are compiled

My spiritual teacher said regarding reading............THERE ARE 3 IMPORTANT THINGS TO DO WHEN YOU READ
1) BE ABLE TO READ
2) UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU READ
3) REMEMBER WHAT YOU HAVE READ

Unfortunately you only know how to read.
I already explained that originally theories were thinking of something and try to make some sort of conclusion out of it possibly turn the theories into practice.
With the passing of time people gave different meaning.
You can give the meaning that you like but do not pretend that i agree with you about the real meaning of the word theory
Too many words have been vandalized and their meaning changed 100%.
When i hear that a certain person serve in the army i feel sick in my guts.
Nobody serve in the army.
Serve come the Latin or the Etruscan and mean servus or slave so as far as someone get paid for doing a job he-she is not a slave and therefore is not serving.
I know you guys did not studied Latin so you wouldn't know the real meaning of the words but at least you shouldn't have the audacity to come out with so called truth.
Yours are just THEORIES without foundation NOT BACKED UP BY EVIDENCE. Smile

You got to establish a real relationship with someone that you trust in order to enjoy love In this case spiritual love.

In fact the first science goes back 7000 years ago when Lord Shiva gave INTUITIONAL SCIENCE.

This physical universe is external to us therefore is not as important as the science that study what is within.

Do you know that in today's modern society there are two different kinds of theories? One, scientific theory, is a proven explanation of natural events backed entirely by facts and research. Two, theory, is from abstract thinking and is used in day to day conversation outside of science and is used frequently in subjects such as philosophy or theology.

There's a difference, now learn it. A part of reading and conversational comprehension is understanding the use(s) of words in their current form.

Now why don't you go have a nice adult conversation instead of nitpicking over definition.
