No. Nigger is an epithet roundly accepted and understood as a derogatory term reserved for humans of african descent. My MIL uses this 'nigger is a generic term' reasoning too. Problem is, regardless of it's generic merits, using it immediately reinforces the common understanding. Ignoring this understanding doesn't make one a wordsmith...it only makes one callous to reality.

My eldest got into a schoolyard fistfight over this insensitive usage of a not-so-unambiguous term. I was the first to not castigate him.

The word should be anethema to all.

In one 'school of though' it's what black people (and some whites like Eminem) can call black people, but what white people (unlike whites like Eminem) CANNOT call black people.

In another school of thought (how I was raised), a nigger is an ignorant person of any race or color.
Mind you, how I was raised was also that it's probably a wise idea to avoid use of the word nigger altogether.
