Actually, the (not so) Great War was the result of too many alliances.

When Gavrilo Princip shot Franz Ferdinand Austria declared war against Serbia.
But Serbia was allied with Russia, who declared war on Austria. Who was allied with Germany,who declared on Russia,who was allied with France. Who declared war on......

To be fair, all the main European powers were just itching for a jolly good war and if it hadn't been this, they would have found some other pretext.

Actually...You're both wrong. It was over pussy. The rest is a cover-up, as is usually the case...In any quarrel, if you look hard enough, you can usually trace the root of the problem back to a woman with her legs spread open. It's a powerful source. Can't deny that.

(except for the civil war, that was actually over a disagreement over the future of American sports. As it turns out, the north was right, it is more fun to watch when black people get to play. Can you imagine how boring basketball would be if the south won?)

I was referring more to queen victoria's ability to keep her grandchildren in line. Alliances can cause a conflict to escalate, yes. But as a general rule, nations tend to make war upon those with whom they don't have an alliance.

Only when one side realizes that hey haven't exactly been cooperating, but rather, they've been manipulated into thinking that the cooperation has been mutually beneficial. I don't have an example, I'm just talking out my ass, but it sounds plausible...

Lion's whole position seems to be "wars exist, and therefore humans aren't a social species." It's an anemic claim to begin with, but especially so when the initial cause of the conversation was evolution and this misrepresented "survival of the fittest," stuff.

Fact is, the guy hasn't been arguing for his own position since this conversation on wars started.
