The first world war was a result of the breakdown in the alliance of the houses of europe. Alliances are formed at least as often formed to prevent war than in response to the threat of it.

Actually...You're both wrong. It was over pussy. The rest is a cover-up, as is usually the case...In any quarrel, if you look hard enough, you can usually trace the root of the problem back to a woman with her legs spread open. It's a powerful source. Can't deny that.
(except for the civil war, that was actually over a disagreement over the future of American sports. As it turns out, the north was right, it is more fun to watch when black people get to play. Can you imagine how boring basketball would be if the south won?)

I was referring more to queen victoria's ability to keep her grandchildren in line. Alliances can cause a conflict to escalate, yes. But as a general rule, nations tend to make war upon those with whom they don't have an alliance.
