The placebo effect only works if the patient is convinced he's getting the real deal...

Actually, this is not true

The placebo effect is without doubt one of the most fascinating things in medicine!

I find that paper strange...
But they do address that strangeness at the end...
"given the impossibility of double-blind assessment of open placebo versus no-treatment control, the effects of report bias cannot be eliminated. Another related limitation is that patients assigned to no-treatment may have been disappointed, thus inflating the differences between open-label placebo and no-treatment control groups. "

It seems the placebo effect of the placebo works! Wink

It is a headfuck isn't it! But one has to go with the evidence. The fact is that the people who had the placebo, even knowing it was a placebo, did better than the ones without. Obviously most studies are designed to eliminate the placebo effect so the usual rules don't really apply when that is what we are testing!

I'm actually not all that surprised. It reflects what I've observed.

Without doubt one of my top 5 pieces of research ever.

She must be smarter than us. I mean, look at how many of us she has on ignore. A veritable testament to her intelligence.
