I wonder how long it will take the average opponent of gay marriage in these states to realize that granting other people equal rights and protection under the law will not impinge on their lives in the slightest. The sky won't fall. The world will go on, and all but the most hateful anti-gay bigots will find something else to worry about.

That's the other really interesting thing about this happening in Utah. Mormons have a very racist history. Up until 1978, black people (or other dark skinned minorities, I would assume) weren't eligible for priesthood and their book of Mormon still has verses that are VERY racist. But now they're just kinda sweeping that racism under the rug. If you question them on it directly, they won't deny it, but they generally just try to avoid talkin about it.

And in another 20-30 years, when the world overwhelmingly accepts GLBT people, even religions accept gay people, the Mormons will probably sweep their homophobia under the rug. Problem is, the space under that rug is getting pretty crowded; I mean, they already have to sweep their racism under there and the polygamy, too.

To their credit, at least they aren't claiming they were fighting for racial equality. Not that I know of, anyway.

The Mormons were also guilty of genocide early on in Utah. They dressed up as native Americans to slaughter non-Mormon settlers for fear of falling into the minority again and having to continue on away from civilized folk.

Yes, Utah is an interesting-- and hilarious -- test case (thank you, Comedy God). But the one I can't wait to see will be that first deep South state (perhaps Louisiana, where I live) whose statute or constitutional amendment is overturned by a federal judge. Forget the Mormons. For sheer entertainment value, nothing beats the sight of Baptists and Evangelicals being dragged, kicking and screaming, into the 21st century. Between their self-righteous indignation and their persecution fantasies, the squeals and ruckus they'll make will be so loud you'd think it was them, rather than Ned Beatty, getting corn-holed in "Deliverance." It's going to be priceless.

Yeah, doesn't surprise me. They did something similar with polygamy: MormonGod™ was cool with it until the government said Utah couldn't become a state if polygamy was legal.

Of course, if you want to ask Mormons the obvious question about race, ask them what their god thought of black people in 1977.

Congrats to Utah. I'm happy for all the couples who can get married now. Hopefully the trend continues. At this point though Congress should consider getting ahead of the game and busting out a 'full legalization' and then maybe some of those republicans could save a bit of face with the American people...maybe.

Judging from the article, it looks like a well-meaning public servant promised more than he could deliver -- more of a cluster-fuck than a conspiracy.

Let's hope there aren't any further bumps in the road.

Maybe I'm a pessimist on this, but I have a feeling that he's stalling until the state can do something to stop same sex marriage. It honestly wouldn't surprise me to see Utah state officials pull shit like that.
