Let's hope there aren't any further bumps in the road.

Maybe I'm a pessimist on this, but I have a feeling that he's stalling until the state can do something to stop same sex marriage. It honestly wouldn't surprise me to see Utah state officials pull shit like that.

Considering it's Utah, yeah, I could see some official trying to pull shit like that.

In this case, though, the person responsible for the fiasco had announced his office would open for an hour on a Saturday, which was unprecedented, to immediately start issuing licenses to same-sex couples who wished to apply (this was the only county office in Utah that moved for such immediate compliance). Apparently, his motive was as much logistical as anything; he wanted to get a jump on the expected demand to take some pressure off the office on Monday and Tuesday.

However, he did a piss poor job of coordinating his deputies and office staff to properly prepare for the event. Further, he seems not to have known that an extraordinary weekend opening required advance security arrangements to be made. Bottom line: he promised much and delivered nothing. People were inconvenienced and understandably disappointed, but the office will be open for regular business tomorrow. And the official who bungled the whole thing seems genuinely contrite.

Religious beliefs aside, one man should not have the power to make laws, our government was set up to avoid such things. When the will of the people for their country or state can be pushed aside as if their voices doesn't matter then this country is falling to a low that I believe no one really wants.

God loves those who believe and those who do not and the same goes for me, you have no choice in this matter. That puts the matter of total free will to rest.

Even the "people" don't get to enact unconstitutional laws. Slavery for example. Or discriminating based on sexual orientation

Since sexual orientation is not mentioned in the constitution, how is it unconstitutional to ban same sex marriages.

Bullshit, G-C. When the Supreme Court ruled 5-4 to let your cocksucking republicunt corporate pals spend all the money they want on political ads or 5-4 to let every asswipe who wants one have a gun you were no where to be heard.

But let someone kick your precious little god in the balls and you're out there whining about "activist judges."

Fuck you, you phony bastard.

The equal protection clause.

Where in the Constitution does it say that it's OK to ban same sex marriages?

Up until 1864, the constitution didn't talk about slavery, either. Does that mean slavery was ok in 1863?

Well, Utah Republicans are planning on fighting it and it looks like the fight will cost them somewhere in the range of $2,000,000 in taxpayer dollars. How much you want to bet they suddenly stop caring about reducing wasteful spending or being fiscally responsible?

Maybe they should read....or have someone read to them...the decision in Romer v Evans.

The majority cannot simply "vote" to take away rights of a minority.

Quote:We must conclude that Amendment 2 classifies homosexuals not to further a proper legislative end but to make them unequal to everyone else. This Colorado cannot do. A State cannot so deem a class of persons a stranger to its laws. Amendment 2 violates the Equal Protection Clause, and the judgment of the Supreme Court of Colorado is affirmed.

It is so ordered.

This was in Colorado....not so far from Utah.
