If the negative involves mutually exclusive contradictory properties, such as the classic married bachelor, then it tends to disprove itself. A pertinent example would be a self-evident god that interacts with the Universe yet remains absolutely undetectable.
The principle reason why atheists don't have a burden of proof is that atheists aren't trying to prove anything.
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist. This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair. Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second. That means there's a situation vacant.'

This guy has said nothing about what he believes or what makes him convinced. He can't give you enough of an account of what this 'god' is supposed to be so that we could know it if we experienced it. He's like a relentless car salesman.
