do you think people who believe in god have a underlying mental illness or symptom?
it seems weird like when i was in the psych ward they even had a chaplain come and tell us about how theres an invisible man in the sky who loves us even though things are really crappy, and he had us pray and talk to him and stuff - but when another patient claimed that god talked to him, he was just written off as psychotic :S

so i dont understand where do u draw the line between mentally ill and spiritual? seems like a lot of people in church during their "holy spirit modes" are pretty crazy! like u guys ever been to a pentecostal church? (they are the ones with 12 year olds who can speak in toungues) i just dont know what to believe anymore.

let me know if this video scares u:

I don't think that religious people are mentally ill, just indoctrinated.

Most people who get sucked into religion are usually raised from early childhood, or have hit some low point in their life, or are otherwise vulnerable. It's not necessarily a mental illness or anything, especially if they're following the more pleasant teachings like love your neighbor and give to the poor and stuff. The high extremists tat are basically the kind of people Yahweh really seemed to want probably do have something wrong with them.

From the video, or from my post? I don't mean to bother people too much, but that's just how it is. I've seen all kinds of people bringing babies to church, and I'm sure you've heard testimonials about people being deep into drug addiction or something, and they found god. Then they put some hard work into fixing their problem, and give god all the credit.

I'd like to point out, too, that it's possible to "have something wrong with you" without being mentally ill.

I don't consider being an asshole as a mental illness. Just a behavioral problem. Like my dad is the man of the house because he pays the bills, and he lets everyone around him know he's the man of the house, but I don't think there's anything wrong with his brain. He just needs some serious chill pills.

We're all playing in the living room, and he wants to take a nap, but he won't go into the other room where the bed is. He just insists we need to be quiet.

Nah, being assholes isn't considered an illness yet. Because of the absurdity of their beliefs however, it is much harder to tell the idiots from those that really have a mental illness.

You'll hear two persons saying that "god spoke to them", how to tell if its just a religionist with his usual methaphorical conversations with god or a person with schizofrenia?
