Y'know, on second thought, this is Texas. I mean, we place a lot of value on brain dead people here. Just look at the last two governors we've had.

I know there are pockets of sanity in Texas, but I still don't know how you Texan AFers deal with that shit.

The law seems to have been intended to apply to terminally-ill women, not dead ones. Not that it justifies over-riding the stated wishes of the woman and the husband in any case. Someone needs to be held accountable for this horror.

Alcohol helps.

In all seriousness, the urban areas tend to be pretty liberal. Austin has a reputation as being pretty liberal and Housto is progressive enough that our mayor is a lesbian. In fact, the only problem with Houston is that we're surrounded by Texas.

To me, the fetus' disabilities, at this point, are irrelevant to this issue. I have hydrocephalus, like this fetus does, but in my case it is secondary to my spina bifida (common tandem within spina bifida). There are "other conditions", but the other conditions are of unknown nature and severity at this point. It's hard to project quality of life at this point.

With that said, this is all about the brain-dead woman. Here in California, we are dealing with a brain-dead teenager whose parents have refused to let go. She was even transferred to another facility that would tend to her, even in brain death. I believe this is still an ongoing event, and if so, it's quite sad. Honestly, regardless of whether the fetus is disabled or a future star quarterback/cheerleader, the brain dead, by law, should be free to move on (and the medical community members in question can therefore do the same). No personal directive should have the power to change that.

That's just terrible. I would think, at the least, you are no longer considered a person if you are dead. I agree that the fetus' condition shouldn't matter in an ideal world, but the fact is, even if it lives, facing huge medical challenges, the odds of it living a good life, free of considerable suffering, are not good. Some chances should not be taken, solely for the sake of an ideal.
