Perhaps you say it because it is what you'd like to believe. You'd like to believe that you can ward off depression with discipline and attitude. Can't blame you for wishing that. But if you've never had your affect break down, you've never really been able to test out that hypothesis.
Unless you believe your will is a ghost inside your body, why should you believe that there is anything at all about you that is not based on and subject to chemistry? Sorry to have to break your bubble, but we are chemistry all the way down and nothing is safe. Bucking up and self-discipline are no defense.
Yes. The line between motivating someone to take their life in their hands again, and victim blaming is very fine here. It's why the secret is so insidious - if you're not rich and happy, it's gotta be your fault.
The fool hath said in his heart, There is a God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good.

"Mental illness arises from a complex interaction of genetic, biological, personality and environmental factors. Mental illnesses affect people of all ages, education levels, income levels and cultures."
I think the Canadians got it right...
Its true that its all going on in your body, but that doesn't mean that there's nothing you can do about it. If you want to, that is.
From what I've seen, victim-playing and the like can be part of the pathology, which makes dealing with depression even more difficult.
That being said, I see no need to be condescending about it. Even if the OP was asking 'Is there anyone here that is NOT depressed?'

...said no one, ever.
"Well, evolution is a theory. It is also a fact. And facts and theories are different things, not rungs in a hierarchy of increasing certainty. Facts are the world's data. Theories are structures of ideas that explain and interpret facts. Facts don't go away when scientists debate rival theories to explain them. Einstein's theory of gravitation replaced Newton's in this century, but apples didn't suspend themselves in midair, pending the outcome. And humans evolved from ape- like ancestors whether they did so by Darwin's proposed mechanism or by some other yet to be discovered."

Depression can be triggered by poor diet, sleep and lack of exercise. It can often cause an imbalance in seratonin levels. This is why even clinically depressed people can feel slight mood elevation from going for a walk or even just moderate exercise.
While I believe modern medicine has its place, I'm more for trying to see if you can manage depression or lessen it through more natural methods.
Too much sex can cause depression too. (I was surprised to read that but something to do with hormone levels elevating and dipping too often)

You are clearly perpetuating a lie.
