If you were born in America, raised in America and live in America, you're American. If you were born in Ireland, raised in Ireland, or have lived long-term in Ireland, you might be Irish. That's kinda how nationality works.
Are we no longer allowed to use Irish to describe our ethnicity?
Of course Americans are American, but it's not the same as for many other countries. Saying you're American does nothing to describe yourself to a person.
