Sexually charged material already mocks christian values, so it's a two for one.

Do you want the public schools to have the students read books with sexually charged material?

Books don't make people fuck. Read one sometime and you'll see what I mean.

Maybe you're right about the schools' role in all this. It's really the responsibility of the parents. I was brought up to view sex as a loving experience between a husband and wife. Now most kids are brought up to view sex as something we do just like all the other animals and it's also really scary because you can catch some terrible disease, so be careful. That's pretty much how the schools will treat it if we can't recommend abstinence or any other moral advice.

You're right, it is the parents responsibility. But if you haven't noticed, the teen pregnancy rate is out of control in the decidedly Christian U.S., and guess what, none of the countries that have this problem under control preach abstinence.

It's amazing to me how Christians never fail to bring up the abortion topic, especially when someone questions the biblical god's morals, but they are so damn uptight about sex that, despite how much they like use the supposed slaughter of the unborn to make a political point, they can't embrace a pragmatic approach to the issue if it means actually being open about what goes on with the penises and vaginas.

Stop trying to have your cake and eat it too.

You know why we should say that? Because it's true.

We really can't, stop kids from having sex: those that want to are going to anyway. Kids aren't vacuous portals that just internalize what their parents and teachers tell them; they're people just like us, only without the same level of rational decision making. Occasionally, they're going to make less than ideal decisions, and this is especially true when it comes to decisions made while aroused, which are never the most clear headed to begin with.

We can't stop teens from having sex, but what we can do is honestly educate them and put them in the best possible position to make sensible choices regarding sex. All abstinence education does is increase the burden of meaningless guilt regarding a natural act, and reinforce the idea that sex isn't something you can communicate with adults about. So you're not only doing more harm than good with abstinence education, but you're also closing off any potential avenues of communication with which to educate them in future. Great job.

Barring some very obvious lessons one can teach regarding consent and health and so on, why should there be a moral point to sex? What reason is there to treat sex as something other than a fun thing you can do, if done responsibly?

Just assuming that it's something else might work for you, but don't presume everyone else has your sexual hangups.

Oh, for fuck's sake. When are we going to stop treating sex as something other than the biologic function that it is.

If the christers would put as much effort into preventing STDs and unwanted pregnancies as they do into trying to keep people from having sex the problems would largely go away.

Some day, probably soon, my kids are going to reach a point where "exited enough to want to" becomes "too excited to care." That makes me really glad that they know what condoms are for and where the condoms we bought for them are.

Trying to keep horny teenagers from fucking is like trying to keep fish from swimming. It isn't going to happen.

The reason to treat sex as something other than a fun thing to is that it makes children. If kids having sex don't require love to be involved, then fathers have no reason to hang around. Then we end up with all these children being raised with no father around and in poverty (which was nowhere as prevalent in the days before the "sexual revolution".) It makes me sick when some guy knocks up a girl and then tries to lie or whatever to get out of having any connection. There's human beings involved. Without love and commitment in the equation you're right - we are just another animal. Kids respond to the society that they live in. If sex is held out by society to be shared in love and commitment, they'll be more apt to go that way. It's a fact that more teens are having sex today than before the 60s and it's also true that more kids are being raised in one-parent families. Ask any American school teacher how that's worked out with kids behavioral problems and parental involvement. One ending comment - I praise any conscientious single parent because I know there are many of you out there.

Is it possible you are conflating two issues here, Lek?

Kids are going to have sex. Teaching them to be responsible about it and use protection leads to people respecting the power of sex but not placing this massive importance on the act.
"There remain four irreducible objections to religious faith: that it wholly misrepresents the origins of man and the cosmos, that because of this original error it manages to combine the maximum servility with the maximum of solipsism, that it is both the result and the cause of dangerous sexual repression, and that it is ultimately grounded on wish-thinking." ~Christopher Hitchens, god is not Great

Not really. Sex is a massively important act. It results in us being born.

But, what if teacher wanted to pray to allah and tells the class that he follows Mohamed ?

Wouldn't You (yes, you personally) want him out of there in no time ?

Would you allow your kids to be brainwashed by "lies" of any other religion but your own ???

You all need to make up your mind once for all about this issue, lol Big Grin

I'll be honest with you. You're right about me not wanting my kids to be told to pray to allah or whatever. So I say don't have prayer or religious education in public schools as long as we don't go overboard and start firing teachers because they made a general comment about Jesus or something. We can share our religious views and pray with our children at home.
