The way he ran from those pursuing his treasure while at times carrying them would make one think he may not have actually had them on his person after all. Shocking, I know! God gave him the power to run while carrying the 200lb gold plates just like he gave Joe the ability to translate the Book of Abraham, duh!! Oh, wait...

God works in mysterious...ah, fuck it!
I have a very old book which details the Mormons killing 122 men women and children, part of a wagon train passing through Utah at Mountain Meadows in 1857.
Who gives a shit if Smith did or did not translate anything. Those like Smith who see visions are mentally ill, this guy was clever with it and fooled lots of weak minded people to sign up to his own warped vision of reality. The early Mormons were not nice people. One of the skeletons in my family closet is that a great, great uncle of mine was converted by Mormon missionaries and immigrated to Utah (he was a Danish national). The Mormons told him that Mormonism was little different from Lutheranism. He learned differently in Utah. But the Mormons were strapped for labor and he had to essentially escape which he did by bribing an Indian tribe to smuggle him out. He wasn't the nicest guy ever himself though, because he turned around and began making money smuggling arms to the Mormons to help them against the Indians that smuggled him out.

Thanks for that Jenny A what an interesting story and piece of American history. If I remember rightly the Mormons disguised themselves as Native Americans during the attack.
I like to remind the young mormon missionaries with nice haircuts and ties who come to the door time to time of the fact. All I have of him are photo-copies of three letters he sent home to Denmark.
