Quote:The early Mormons were not nice people.

That's putting it mildly.

Quote:The Mountain Meadows Massacre was the killing of roughly 120 emigrants who were passing through Southern Utah in September 1857. The massacre occurred on September 11, 1857. The emigrants–men, women, and children–were traveling from Arkansas to California, part of the Baker-Fancher wagon train. They were killed by a group of Mormons with the help of local Paiute Indians.

Pretty much. All I have of him are photo-copies of three letters he sent home to Denmark.

Oh shit. My family comes from Danish immigrants, and they're all still a bunch of Mormons. That would be strange if there was some kind of relation here.

Stranger things have happened, but I doubt it in this case. My mom's folks were born in Denmark, but they have no Mormon connections beyond my great uncle's little foray into Utah. But, the Mormons were pretty successful in Denmark for a while and there are many people of Danish ancestry in Utah.

Sorry. I just wanted to get in on the family history stuff going on...

I also have a German ancestor who beat feet to the US because back in Germany he beat a guy to death with a sapling.

You know, a young tree.

True story.

He wasn't Mormon, though.

Okay, I leave now.

Guy must have really pissed him off - cause you know that assbeating took some serious time and dedication. I almost wonder if he had to take a break at some point to rest his arm - which, really, would just make your ancestor that much more of a badass.

My grandfather was held and questioned for several days over a string of murders involving a claw hammer (ultimately, they didn't have enough on him and they never closed the case). He went into the klink with money in his pocket - and came out of the klink with money in his pocket, he's a very small man. Apparently, no one wanted to risk it. I have trouble imagining him as the sort of guy who would murder someone with a claw hammer - but I've seen him deliver enough judicious assbeatings with lesser implements and for no discernable reason to realize that ultimately, it's my affection for the man driving my conclusions. He's pretty mum about the subject, except to say that "them fellers had it comin".

Was his last name Meinkraft?
"Every luxury has a deep price. Every indulgence, a cosmic cost. Each fiber of pleasure you experience causes equivalent pain somewhere else. This is the first law of emodynamics [sic]. Joy can be neither created nor destroyed. The balance of happiness is constant.

Fact: Every time you eat a bite of cake, someone gets horsewhipped.

Facter: Every time two people kiss, an orphanage collapses.

Factest: Every time a baby is born, an innocent animal is severely mocked for its physical appearance. Don't be a pleasure hog. Your every smile is a dagger. Happiness is murder.

There have been two killings in my family, one on each parent's side: my paternal grandmother killed killed her husband when she discovered him cheating, and my maternal great-aunt, who killed her husband when she discovered him cheating. In neither case was the killer prosecuted.

Needless to say, I'm a loyal and faithful man.
