North Korea is fine how it is... as someone who has been there and has extended family livening.... there i know.. the whole ideal of June is about self-reliance.. but they need to be aloud to make weapons to defend the country just like any other Country's... They should be able to have nukes and nuclear power just like other Country's... And the Us military needs to get the fuck out of south Korea...

But that is just what i think...

Well, we kind of made a commitment to the S. Korean people, you know?

It is a little odd to suppose South Korea, one of the wealthiest countries in the world, with twice the population, 30 times the industrail output of North Korea, and one of the most advanced military industrial complexes in Asia, should have no alternative to relying on America for security from North Korea, don't you think?

It's not an issue of alternatives though. Ideally we stick by our friends regardless of what position they find themselves in. That wealth (and that mic) has been generated in very large part by collaboration with the US, wouldn't you say?

That's ignoring that we don't maintain a presence in S. Korea solely for the purpose of "standing down" N. Korea. It keeps troops on station in the region, for a quick response. The military has a commitment to our allies, our interests, and ultimately the interests of the wider world at large. Wouldn't you say?

It is very unlikely American troops stationed in South Korea could ever be quickly redeployed to respond to any crisis outside of Korea. It is also extremely unlikely South Korea would permit American forces in South Korea to conduct operations from Korean soil against any other power outside Korea. American presence in South Korea is widely disliked and barely tolerated, and only continue because South Korea does not wish to let Japan dominate America's perception of who matters to American interest in East Asia. If given a choice, South Korea would rather ally with China to gang up on Japan than to join any effort by either the US or Japan to contain China. It is Korea's ambition to achieve unification on Korean penninsula and then leverage its favorable demographics and far faster rates of economic growth to supplant Japan as the premier military and economic power in East Asia next to China before middle of the 20th china.

RE: North Korean policy?
You misunderstand, troops don't always conduct military operations - most of the time, when not actively at war or in a warzone......they conduct civilian operations. I built more houses than I destroyed. I lay pavement. I cut down trees. I piled up rocks and rubble. It's a response to -anything- that the military might be able to respond to (so yes, that would obviously include military action). Isn't it a bit naive to think that S. Korea's permission would be a deciding factor if american interests required action and the most convenient troops on hand were in S. Korea? I mean, we have commitments, we're not saints.

I'm aware that the american presence in S. Korea is widely disliked (or at the least that such sentiment is expressed widely), I've been there. To be honest, we're widely disliked most of the places we're at and I've been to alot of places that fly the rw & b on foereign soil.....- but that doesn't change the mutually beneficial arrangement of the relationship, as you've so succinctly put it.

I'm thinking most North Korean soldiers that are employed invading the south will have their heads explode from seeing all the consumer crap they find.

It will be like Mars Attacks, except without the space helmets to contain the brain goo.

"Mutually beneficial" yes. I suppose that it would be pretty easy to call an end to this though, wouldn't it?

Gee, lets see...um...

Quote:After a new wave of U.N. sanctions, on 11 March 2013, North Korea claimed that it had invalidated the 1953 armistice.[251] On 13 March 2013, North Korea confirmed it ended the 1953 Armistice and declared North Korea "is not restrained by the North-South declaration on non-aggression."[252] On 30 March 2013, North Korea stated that it had entered a "state of war" with South Korea and declared that "The long-standing situation of the Korean peninsula being neither at peace nor at war is finally over." [32] Speaking on 4 April 2013, the United States Secretary of Defense, Chuck Hagel, informed the press that Pyongyang had "formally informed" the Pentagon that it had "ratified" the potential usage of a nuclear weapon against South Korea, Japan and the United States of America, including Guam and Hawaii.[253] Hagel also stated that the US would deploy the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense anti-ballistic missile system to Guam, due to a credible and realistic nuclear threat from North Korea.[254]
.......Yep, they're still assholes.
