Some of the discussions on this forum have brought up the fact that there are two genealogies of Jesus in the Bible and claimed that that proves the Bible is wrong. Actually there is a simple explanation for the two genealogies; Jesus had two parents.
Matthew begins with the genealogy of Joseph. Joseph was a descendant of David through Solomon and the kings who succeeded him. Apparently Joseph would have been king if the line of David had remained in power. Jesus wasn't the biological son of Joseph but he was the legal son because Joseph was married to Mary when Jesus was born. This meant that Jesus was Joseph's heir and through him he inherited the right to be king of the Jews.
Matthew tell the story of Jesus' birth from Matthew's point of view. He tells us that an angel told Joseph to marry Mary but says nothing of the angel's appearance to Mary.
Luke, on the other hand, tells the story entirely from Mary's viewpoint. It seems reasonable to conclude that the genealogy he gives is that of Mary.
