Yeah, during French Revolution when guillotine was the national sport, some scientific minded chap actually persuaded some soon to be victims to agree to keep blinking their eyes for as long as possible after decapitation in order to determine how long the head might remain conscious after it comes off.

It appears 30-45 seconds is the conclusion.

This appears to agree with another experiment carried out also during the French Revolution, where the experimenter yells into the ear of the decapitated head, or prick it with a pin, to elicit response. In general the decapitated head responds to the stimuli about half a minute after decapitation. Then stop.

Although some heads kept responding for up to 2 minutes.

I lived through the revolution in 1978-79 which overthrew the Shah of Iran. I was twelve years old. I'll never forget what I witnessed there; rioting around my school being broken up by army troops with a couple of armored cars, my bus rolling over bodies like they were speedbumps.

I wrote a book about it, and tried to put it to bed, but goddamn if I don't still leak a little when I think back to being young and terrified and deflowered. It changed me forever.
