Pope Francis tipped to win Nobel Peace Prize
October 7, 2014 at 10:59 pm
Quote:Pope Francis is the favourite to win this year's Nobel Peace Prize, according to bookmakers. The Argentinian Pope is now the 5-2 front-runner for the award, which will be announced by the Nobel Institute in Oslo on Friday, according to bookmaker's William Hill. Paddy Power also has him as a strong contender.
Since being elected in March last year after the resignation of Benedict XVI, the Jesuit pontiff has repeatedly called for peace in conflict zones such as Ukraine, Syria and Iraq.
He urged reconciliation in the conflict between the Israelis and the Palestinians when he visited the Holy Land this summer, and stopped to pray at the foot of the concrete barrier that separates Jerusalem from Bethlehem.
In July, during an address to the faithful in St Peter's Square, he deviated from his prepared speech to call for peace in conflict zones around the world, from the Middle East and Ukraine to northern Nigeria and the Central African Republic.
[...] If chosen, he would be the first Pope ever to receive a Nobel Peace Prize.

Um...given how things have gone in those places he seems like the biggest fuck-up going. Maybe he should shut the fuck up?

Calling for peace as opposed to actually doing something.
Oh, and he prayed too.
I'd actually support a nomination if he'd hang all the pedophiles out to dry in the appropriate criminal justice systems of the countries they offended in, pay all the judgments todate, adequately fund future claims, un-hide church assets, defrock the bishops, cardinals, officials that hid or transferred pedophiles, allocute (or release files) on ALL pedophiles in the church including dead ones if victims are still living.
(feel free to add more terms and conditions, I am under no illusions any of it will EVER happen)

If the best that the Nobel Committee can come up with is some bozo who talks to his invisible friend maybe they should forgo a "peace" prize this year.
It seems dreadfully inappropriate the way things are going.

We'll see how efficacious prayer is ... I mean, we've got God's head honcho kneeballin' in the Holiest of Holies.
Whaddya wanna bet the fuckers keep on killing each other, no matter the entreaties of the Vicar of Christ himself?

The fact that the moral standards of a good person are lowered so much when it comes to the Catholic Church is a bit depressing. The biggest defense I hear for this Pope (from atheists often too) is something like "He's not as bad as the last ones!" or "For the Catholic Church, this guy is an exemplary figure". It's the most mindless and ridiculous defense of someone who has done exactly nothing to change the doctrines or endorsements or massive fiscal holdings of the church. Oh yeah, and he's still coddling and protecting pedophile rapists. He can win the "basic fucking human deceny" prize once he exposes and turns in all of the rapists of whom he's currently the leader.
In every country and every age, the priest had been hostile to Liberty.

"Well, evolution is a theory. It is also a fact. And facts and theories are different things, not rungs in a hierarchy of increasing certainty. Facts are the world's data. Theories are structures of ideas that explain and interpret facts. Facts don't go away when scientists debate rival theories to explain them. Einstein's theory of gravitation replaced Newton's in this century, but apples didn't suspend themselves in midair, pending the outcome. And humans evolved from ape- like ancestors whether they did so by Darwin's proposed mechanism or by some other yet to be discovered."

I like Francis. I think he's taken the right side of a whole lot of issues, and given the number of catholics in the world, that's a huge plus-- whatever you think about the Catholic religion.
