Why should Christians be moral?

You just answered the question, 'Why believe in god?'

"I think I use the term “radical” rather loosely, just for emphasis. If you describe yourself as “atheist,” some people will say, “Don’t you mean ‘agnostic’?” I have to reply that I really do mean atheist, I really do not believe that there is a god; in fact, I am convinced that there is not a god (a subtle difference). I see not a shred of evidence to suggest that there is one ... etc., etc. It’s easier to say that I am a radical atheist, just to signal that I really mean it, have thought about it a great deal, and that it’s an opinion I hold seriously." - Douglas Adams (and I echo the sentiment)

RE: Why should Christians be moral?
I find it absurd that someone died for all the sins I will do in my life, before I was born. It's utterly ridiculous. And what motivation do I have to not sin if it's all forgiven? I can just say I love Jesus and all that shit, and then behave as atrociously as I want.

Still no definition of moral from theists as far as I'm aware that doesn't just involve "what God says". Atheists have the same morals theists have, it's just theists find it easier to discard some of them claiming divine justification.

RE: Why should Christians be moral?
I've read through the thread and all the Christians have been consistent in their explanations, the atheist have been all over the board. The atheist have said different thing about the same subject, the Christians responses have been the same on each subject. Seems to me, I've actually noticed this for sometime now, that the atheist have their own specific beliefs about scripture and they are always the using the same things over and over. Why do you all do this, why are you not consistent in what you say about the same subject. You all have more different ideas about what's in the Bible than the Christians here, heck you're doing what you claim Christians do, interpretation of scriptures for what you want it to say. I know most of you are not interested in learning what the scriptures mean but, with the intelligence you guys profess and the rational thinking you claim one would naturally believe you all would have the same things to say about the same subjects.

God loves those who believe and those who do not and the same goes for me, you have no choice in this matter. That puts the matter of total free will to rest.

Not sure if I already chimed in here or not, GC. But I think the motivation for xtians is simple: win the grand prize of heaven and avoid the stiff penalty which is hell. Did I miss anything?

Christian morals are certainly not to do with wellbeing, because that can be easily demonstrated to be false.

RE: Why should Christians be moral?
When it comes to morality, it would be expected that a Christian's approach would be consistent, since it's pretty simple: whatever god says is moral, is moral. The explanations for how that works are a bit less consistent, though much more amusing and/or horrifying. Even the tale of the young prince, which brings up the arbitrary nature of salvation (and along with the story of Job, should scare the wits out of any Christian), has a simple explanation once we agree that moral = whatever god says it is.
"Well, evolution is a theory. It is also a fact. And facts and theories are different things, not rungs in a hierarchy of increasing certainty. Facts are the world's data. Theories are structures of ideas that explain and interpret facts. Facts don't go away when scientists debate rival theories to explain them. Einstein's theory of gravitation replaced Newton's in this century, but apples didn't suspend themselves in midair, pending the outcome. And humans evolved from ape- like ancestors whether they did so by Darwin's proposed mechanism or by some other yet to be discovered."

By admitting that, or refusing to give any other definition, they are amoral. There's nothing more to it. They're mindless subservients.

The thing is, they don't actually follow those morals. Only the bits they like. So it's unbelievably stupid and hypocritical to try and claim that definition. They would like to think that is the definition, because they are scared to state otherwise.

.

What about this ?

"All sins are commited against God. Therefore God sets the standard in which attonement/compensation must be satasified. God's standard (Righteousness) Demands a Death/Blood shed for any sin. why? Because He says so. (That is the only explaination given.)"

"Because he says so" is both mysterious and dictatorial.

There's nothing mysterious about "do it because I can crush you like a gnat."
