Weird! Thx
In the UK that goes tax free too... I guess that's the same for you? With our charity we know the administration costs are amongst the lowest around. We also knew where the money went, which is of course also essential.

Yeah, it's also said with the words "for dust you are
and to dust you will return." So the ashes symbolize that.

I think it's mostly a Catholic thing, too. Though I could be wrong.
Btw, Fr0d0, I can get behind giving up a paycheck. THAT makes sense, you're actually giving something up to benefit others, instead of frivolously giving up soda or something, which serves no one.

Ash Wednesday = Fun Day for me.
I get such a kick out of telling people "Excuse me, I don't know if you are aware, but you have some dirt on your forehead."
Oh the looks you get are hilarious.

I could put it on my tax return as a write-off but I never bothered to. It is not tax excempt, just a percentage I believe.

In the UK you fill in a form Leo and the charity gets the £1 before you pay tax on it... so they get more.

Ah, that's an odd way of doing it. I think the charities if registered are tax exempt so they don't pay anything on what I donate. I'd have to look into that though.
