Atheism a religion?
#31
RE: Atheism a religion?
Strong atheism is definitely a faith-based position.

From Wikipedia:
Quote:Strong atheism is the explicit affirmation that gods do not exist

It's not like the existence of God (or a supernatural creator of the cosmos) is an impossibility. Since anything exists at all, it's possible for God to exist.

What I'm saying is, you need to keep an open mind. It is illogical to pass a judgment on the idea, because you don't have all the facts in the matter (and let's face it, nobody does). But, just because you don't have evidence for something doesn't make it non-existent. Bad example, but 500 years ago, we didn't have evidence that the Earth was round, but that didn't make it necessarily untrue.

If you close your mind and take the position that God does NOT or CANNOT exist, you've taken a decision based on faith, since you have no evidence to disprove it nor prove it. Decisions made with lack of ALL the evidence are close-minded and inherently flawed.

I guess taking my logic you could make the argument that it's impossible to pass judgment on whether unicorns and faeries exist, and that by saying so you make a faith-based decision. It's been a couple years since I took a logic class, so maybe someone can help solidify my argument.

So... for you is it possible for the Rusells teapot to exist or Swazee the rainmaker?
- Science is not trying to create an answer like religion, it tries to find an answer.

It is POSSIBLE yes...(for me too) but...not fucking probable!!!

Just because a negative can't be disproved...it's possible...

Or perhaps rather...possibly possible lol (but definitely(VERY!!!!) improbable).

Like I said I'm not sure how to close the argument, in the logical sense, so it's not a Russel's teapot argument. What I am saying is it's impossible for us to know whether there is a God or not. Hell we don't even know the true nature of existence or its beginnings (sure the big bang... nothing was there and then it exploded), so therefore it is close-minded to completely dismiss the idea. What you can argue is that there isn't a personal God, since he sure doesn't give a rat's ass what happens on Earth, that's pretty evident.

By making the assertion that God does not exist, as in strong atheism, you do so without any way of proving your conviction. A belief made without proof is faith.

No. Not necessarily. He could just be an Evil/neutral/stupid/chaotic/mad/callous/just plain incompetent personal God.....

Or something else unknown...something 'mysterious' maybe lol - like he's got bigger things to deal with than us mere mortal humans....

What if off in the universe he has a fuckload of other planets to deal with with ALIEN life forms that need MORE help and experience MORE suffering AND - it's just too much for him to deal with...

Like I said he could be incompetent ....or atleast not omnipotent...he could be relatively amazing but have so much to fucking deal with that he can't do it all....and he's gotta have SOME priorties.

There's only evidence against a GOOD personal God that's ALSO capable of helping us...not against an Evil/neutral/stupid/chaotic/mad/callous/just plain incompetent personal God - as I have said.

The point is you're able to make the case against a personal God based on evidence. The evidence being he doesn't talk to you or make his presence known in any real way. There's more substance to that argument than saying "God did not create the universe", or even that he does not exist, which is a fallacy because you do not know what caused existence to occur (and for all intents and purposes, we'll probably never know).

Yeah well the fact there is no evidence of his presence is reason to believe he doesn't exist. Yeah.

But that still applies somewhat to the deist God too. There's still zero evidence....

AND the fact there is no evidence whatsoever of an intervening God I still do not think DISPROVES personal "God".

He could just be extremely hard to detect.
